a 3D-printed ceramic facade in the historic city of Delft, designed and produced by Studio RAP. It reinterprets the decorative qualities and design vocabulary of Delft Blue porcelain, combining 3D clay printing, computational design, and artisanal glazing into a contemporary form of ceramic ornamentation. The design The project frames the communal courtyard of the PoortMeesters residential block, part of the Nieuw Delft urban redevelopment, with two large entry gates. Each gate is roughly four metres wide, eight metres high, and twelve metres deep, and covers a large public staircase. The gates refer to Delft as a medieval trading city with its many city gates, and give passers-by a glimpse of the courtyard inside. The design takes its cue from traditional Delft Blue porcelain plates, whose vocabulary shifted over the centuries from copying Chinese and Japanese designs to contemporary Dutch ones, while keeping a recurring division between a decorative, nature-inspired frame and an idyllic scene. That division is the starting point here: the idyllic scene is the changing life of the courtyard, while the gates form a three-dimensional frame of algorithmically designed, nature-inspired patterns that guide people from the public space into the semi-public courtyard.3D-printed ceramicsThe two gates are covered with approximately 3,000 unique 3D-printed ceramic tiles. An algorithmic approach to the pattern design accounts for the constraints of clay printing: maximum overhang, width, height and depth, shrinkage, and internal support structure. Because each tile is printed, varying its shape becomes a way of "painting with shapes". A transparent blue runny glaze reads as light blue on the convex hills of the tiles and pools into deep blue in the concave valleys, creating smooth transitions between hues. The deep blue connects to Delft Blue porcelain and the surrounding canals, and contrasts with the earth-toned brickwork of the building. Together, the project expresses the identity of Delft in a contemporary way: referring to its history through nature-inspired patterns in blue, and to the Delft of today as a city of knowledge through computational design and 3D-printing technology. Ceramic House is a 3D-printed ceramic facade for a boutique on Amsterdam's P.C. Hooftstraat. Studio RAP designed and produced the facade in-house, using its own custom-built 3D-printing technology to print each bespoke ceramic tile. The result adds a contemporary design language to the street's historic architecture, combining algorithmic design, 3D-printed ceramics, and artisanal glazing. Its textural, wave-like surface is inspired by knitted textiles. Algorithmic design Using design algorithms developed in-house, the facade reinterprets the decorative qualities and vocabulary of glazed ceramics in Amsterdam. It retains the silhouette of the original facade and continues the street's characteristic tripartite structure. The scale, size, type, and colour of the ornament and materials are tuned to the neighbouring buildings, so the new facade integrates with its historic surroundings. The surface carries layered patterns drawn from textiles: creases, interlooping yarns, and stitches. Its relief shifts as you move past it, revealing new detail from different angles. 3D-printed ceramic tiles The tiles take cues from the ceramic collection of the Rijksmuseum. Studio RAP's large-scale 3D-printing technology produces highly differentiated, algorithmically designed detail. The studio developed this fabrication process over several years, including its own robotic systems, with the team working directly with the robots to produce each ceramic piece.Artisanal glazing At street level, the facade uses large 3D-printed ceramic tiles of roughly 40 x 20 cm, glazed in pearl white with a subtle touch of yellow by Royal Tichelaar. The tiles read as expressive at eye level and align flush where they meet the ground. On the upper floors, 3D-printed bricks are glazed in three shades of red, composed alongside the original masonry cross bond, with abstract ornamentation that fades towards the top. The bricks sit in laser-cut stainless steel cassettes that echo the original detailing. Conceived together as a bespoke façade-mounted ceramic surface for one of the country's high-voltage transformer stations, the project translates the invisible electromagnetic forces humming inside the building into a tactile, three-dimensional relief. By combining algorithmic design, 3D clay printing, and artisanal glazing, Powerwall transforms a piece of essential infrastructure into a work of architectural innovation, redefining its identity and providing a lasting contribution to the surrounding neighborhood. The design A transformer station is a closed, utilitarian building that quietly carries a region's electricity, and usually sits in a neighbourhood as an anonymous volume. Powerwall adds a ceramic surface to that structure, turning a blank façade into an artwork that reflects the energy humming within. Spanning eight by five metres and integrated into the brick façade of Switchstation Beverwijk (designed by Powerhouse Company for grid operator TenneT), the artwork takes its cue from the forces it conceals. The flow lines of the transformers' electromagnetic fields become the design vocabulary: sweeping spirals and flowing lines move across the surface, organised by algorithm into a composition that feels both static and in motion. A translucent turquoise glaze shifts with the daylight, so the artwork reads differently at every moment of the day. Rather than hiding the building's function, the façade illustrates it, a portrait of electricity rendered in ceramic. 3D-printed ceramics Powerwall is made of 322 unique 3D-printed ceramic tiles. Each tile is first shaped by Studio RAP's computational design algorithms, which translate the magnetic-field geometry into buildable forms, and then produced by a robotic clay printer in the studio's Rotterdam workshop. The print layers are deliberately tuned to create a subtle ribbed texture that amplifies the 3D-printing effect, giving each piece its own rhythm and recording the robot's path in the clay.A translucent turquoise glaze, applied across the whole surface, settles into the printed grooves and pools in the recessed areas. Ceramics shrink and warp during firing, so the final piece is never an exact replica of the digital model but an organic, characterful element; the glaze accentuates the depth of the relief and the meeting of digital logic and ceramic craft. Every panel and tolerance was engineered to accommodate the behaviour of the fired clay before the elements were assembled into the brick façade on site. pair of 3D-printed ceramic feature walls by Studio RAP for the entrance lobby of Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab, a luxury hotel in Dubai. Positioned on either side of the entrance, the two walls frame the approach into the building and create a calm, expressive moment of arrival. The design The design takes its cue from the nearby Gulf. The curved forms recall the movement of waves, while the surface patterns grow more intricate up close, revealing flowing lines and layered ridges that interact with light and shadow through the day. Large, specially designed corner tiles wrap the pattern around the edges, reinforcing the sculptural character and spatial clarity of the installation. 3D-printed ceramics Each wall measures 6 metres high and 9 metres long. In total, Studio RAP designed and 3D-printed around 900 unique ceramic tiles, each generated parametrically and produced in-house at the studio's facility in Rotterdam. This method gave full control over form, fit, and material quality across the entire installation. Blue Voyage is one of the largest 3D-printed ceramic architectural installations realised to date. A pedestrian passage for all Rotterdammers, linking small parks, squares, and spaces into a new natural route along primary schools, neighborhood care, petting zoos, art, community centers, and small shops. A connector that strengthens the local economy and offers a welcome refuge for people, plants, and animals in the city. Thanks to a varied program of workshops and workspaces, daytime cafés, and a diverse and accessible housing program, it will provide a quality boost for the city of Rotterdam. Project Name: De Herwaert Location: Westersingel, Rotterdam (NL) Client: FULLHOUSE Architect: Kraaijvanger Architecten Elementair architect: Studio RAP Contractor facade cladding / 3d-ceramic-printing: Studio RAP Main contractor: FULLSPEED The transformation of the Westersingel 18-20 ensemble requires a layered approach that fits within the historical context and the protected cityscape. In this way, we enrich the golden edge of the Westersingel by translating 19th-century grandeur into contemporary architecture with three expressive façades. The central building is the most expressive, featuring ceramic cladding. These sculptural ornaments are 3D-printed by Studio RAP in Rotterdam itself, using more than 50% recycled material.The façades in this street also display great diversity in their materialization. Thanks to a carefully balanced combination of brick, stucco, polished concrete, and ceramics, De Herwaert presents a rich palette of materials, with a distinct finish for each of the three buildings. The transparent Herwaert Passage is where various connections visibly converge. The ceramic frames visibly enclose different spaces, offering views of the living room with daytime cafés, the residential-work entrance, and providing a green sightline through to the garden, the pavilion, and the Wijkpark. The richly decorated ceramic tiles on the Westersingel side feature abstract, water-inspired ornaments. These gradually transition toward the Wijkpark into subtly abstract, nature-inspired decorations. Ceramics also frame special elements in the garden, appearing along the pond’s edge, the pavilion’s roofline, and the columns of the gate leading to the Wijkpark, all echoing the ornamental style of the frames in the passage. In the Herwaert Garden, we will realize the pavilion—a uniquely transparent building oriented toward the garden, the passage, and the Wijkpark. The pavilion connects to the basement, forming the domain of De Makerij. De Makerij will host a social ceramics workshop where students and individuals with limited access to the labor market can experience creative craftsmanship. The courses will be taught by master ceramicists who will also have their own workshops in the pavilion, where their works will be showcased in the central core. The Herwaert Garden is designed with clear structure and offers a lush, naturally cohesive setting with typical elements of an enclosed garden: vine-covered walls, an entrance gate, a classical axis, and a pond. De Herwaert will serve as an important green link in the area. To that end, we are creating high biodiversity on two levels within the Herwaert Garden. On the landscape above the basement roofs, plants that thrive in drier, higher conditions will grow, while the lower section functions as a rain garden, supporting species that prefer wetter environments. The water system of De Herwaert consists of several smart retention roofs (in the garden, on the pavilion, and on the main building), which are controlled by weather forecasts. These roofs are connected to a retention pond. In transforming Westersingel 18-20, we preserve the qualities of the existing buildings. By creating a passage through the central building, the load-bearing structure—and thus the considerable concrete—of the two outer buildings can remain untouched for maximum material efficiency. Set back and staggered in height, rooftop extensions on numbers 18 and 19 reflect the architecture of the façades below and follow the parceling of these buildings. Designed by Studio RAP, its architecture and nautical detailing refer to the city's maritime heritage. The development The ensemble holds 47 apartments across six housing types, from compact two-room apartments to penthouses with 360-degree views; 26% are affordable homes. The mix is intended to welcome a broad range of residents and support social cohesion in the neighbourhood. At its heart is a shared courtyard garden, set above the underground parking and planted for biodiversity. Communal features include a shared living room overlooking the canal and generous outdoor galleries that encourage interaction between residents. Ceramic rope ornaments A defining corner of the building carries a façade of 3D-printed ceramic rope ornaments, made from circular clay. These offer a contemporary, tactile reference to Vlissingen's rope-making history, blending the site's tradition with current fabrication techniques. Sustainability Sustainability runs through the plan. All homes reach at least an A+++ energy label, using heat pumps, solar panels, and aquifer thermal energy storage. Circular and biobased materials, including hemp insulation and recycled brick, contribute to a 97% material reuse rate. The design draws on the historic Ginkgo tree in Utrecht's Botanical Garden, believed to be the first of its kind planted in Europe centuries ago. The passage Three monumental columns bring the soul of the building to life. The form unfolds in an elegant, leaf-inspired geometry that gracefully ascends to embrace the ceiling, turning an everyday route through the building into a moment of pause. Ceramic Column Hundreds of unique 3D-printed tiles come together in an immersive pattern, finished in a warm golden transparent glaze. The tactile surface catches the light differently at every hour of the day, adding a moment of genuine joy and wonder to everyday life. The passage Richly detailed double-high pilasters rise from the plinth, establishing verticality and depth. They manifest themselves through the passage, shaping how you move through the corner. The result is a warm, powerful design that adds a recognisable corner accent to the closed building block. Ceramics The plinth and passage are fully realised in 3D-printed ceramics. Raggedness The contour of the block and of each pier is frayed. This makes the block recognizable with a natural and diverse identity. The frayed piers are not evenly distributed over the facade surface, which reinforces the diversity of the facade's view. Additionally, the piers follow the interior walls so that full glass window openings can be realised. 2. Horizontality The balustrades outline the entire block on each floor. The detailing and materialisation is distinctive compared to the two blocks above, but together recognizable as a coherent design. 3. Special Transition The balustrade and piers are connected via a soft and subtle transition. The facade is designed with expressive details and aspires to introduce a new expressive aesthetic to residential high rise buildings, making the built environment more exciting, diverse and inspiring. All facade tiles are generated by custom-designed algorithms.
