Architectural Experience
Studio RAP is a Rotterdam-based design studio specialising in ceramic architecture. The studio designs and produces bespoke facades, feature walls, entrances and art installations, each developed to be one of a kind. By combining computational design with robotic clay printing, Studio RAP creates architecture that is richly detailed, tactile and rooted in the place it belongs to.Digital Craftsmanship
Bringing design, engineering and fabrication together in one studio makes it possible to create ceramic experiences of remarkable intricacy and depth. Flowing, detailed ornament can be shaped and built at the scale of a building, tailored to each place. Every element can be one of a kind, and an ambitious design reaches the facade in the exact form, texture and glaze it was imagined in, and endures there for generations.Having design and production side by side also brings certainty to a project. Budget and planning are clear from the outset, and finished tiles are designed and delivered quickly and to schedule.
Selected work
Studio RAP's work spans landmark facades, interiors and public art. New Delft Blue reinterprets Dutch ceramic heritage as two monumental 3D-printed gates in Delft. The Ceramic House on Amsterdam's P.C. Hooftstraat is among the first fully 3D-printed ceramic facades in the world. Blue Voyage is a sculptural ceramic wall for the Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab in Dubai. FAQ
What role do you play in a project?
We are a design studio. Every project is conceived and developed by us, from the initial concept through to the finished result. We don't manufacture tiles from third-party designs, but we're always glad to join a project team as a design partner, and the earlier we're involved, the more we can shape the outcome.
What does the design phase look like?
We communicate our ideas through sketches, renderings, prototypes and mock-ups, ensuring the vision is accurately translated into the right concept and the intended final look and feel before production begins.
What colours, shapes and textures are possible?
Because we develop our own glazes in-house, our designs aren't limited to a fixed range. We can explore a wide spectrum of colours, textures and forms, and shape them around the ambition of each project.
Can your work be used both outdoors and indoors?
Our tiles are tested for exterior use and can be applied to façades, while remaining equally suited to interior environments.
Will the tiles withstand harsh winters and frost?
The tiles are TCKI-certified and have passed a freeze-thaw test of 150 cycles, ensuring they retain their integrity outdoors without cracking or degrading, even under prolonged exposure to cold and wet conditions.
How strong and durable are the tiles?
The tiles are engineered for demanding architectural applications. Depending on the tile's shape and backing construction, they also withstand impact testing, making them suitable for both exposed and high-traffic settings.
How are the tiles installed or mounted?
Depending on the application and the backing construction, the tiles can be either mechanically mounted or glued.
How are the tiles maintained?
Made from high-quality ceramic, the tiles are straightforward to clean and retain their finish over time, requiring minimal maintenance.
